Student Visa / Study Permit
The Student Visa is designed for individuals aspiring to study in Canada for more than 6 months at a Designated Learning Institution (DLI).
To obtain this visa, a study permit is essential, and the application process involves the following requirements.
Registration and Admission to a valid study center (college or university), along with a letter of admission from the institution.
Submission of financial documents demonstrating the ability to cover tuition and living expenses. This includes past account turnover (4-6 months), bank account balance (converted to Canadian dollars), proof of university tuition payment, scholarship letters, etc.
Minimum acceptable financial requirements by the immigration office:
Outside Quebec: $10,000 per year per student ($833 per month), excluding tuition; $4,000 with the applicant; $3,000 for children.
Quebec: $11,000 per year per student ($917 per month), including tuition; $5,100 with the applicant; $3,800 for children.
Submission of documents proving the intention to leave the country after graduation.
No criminal background.
Valid passport or proof of permanent residence/citizenship for individuals residing in the United States.
Two photos.
Letter of explanation to the Immigration Office from the applicant, detailing reasons for choosing Canada for study.
A certificate (CAQ) for applicants planning to study in Quebec.
Financial documents and identification for the applicant's spouse and children.
Apply for Student Visa.
Prepare supporting documents.
File online or on paper with Immigration Canada.
Undergo fingerprinting.
Visa pickup if accepted.
If your country is approved for ETA, you may receive a letter of acceptance at this stage, allowing you to apply for either a tourist visa or an ETA.
The validity of a student visa is typically up to 5 years or until the passport expiration date.
At the airport/border, a study permit is usually provided, allowing part-time work up to 20 hours per week.
The study permit is valid for three months longer than the study duration, facilitating various immigration paths for permanent residency in Canada post-graduation.
